SYMARK POWERBROKER® 3.5 PROVIDES NEW SCRIPTING TOOL FOR DEVELOPING SECURITY
POLICIES TO PROTECT UNIX/LINUX ROOT PRIVILEGES
Leading UNIX/Linux security provider also announces extended platform
support for Linux running on the new IBM POWER5 platform AGOURA HILLS, Calif. – August 16, 2004 –
Symark today announced PowerBroker 3.5, with a new policy scripting GUI to speed
the development of UNIX and Linux security policies. PowerBroker provides
granular delegation of ROOT and other administrative privileges for trusted
users without providing full access, thus reducing the risk of accidental damage
or malicious activity. PowerBroker also manages privileges and access to
third-party applications such as Oracle and SAP.
“With the movement of Linux deeper into the
enterprise data center, many of our customers running legacy UNIX platforms now
have to concurrently deploy and manage new Linux systems,” says Jeff McGrath,
Director of Product Marketing for Symark. “PowerBroker allows our customers to
centrally manage root and other special account privileges. With the new
policy-scripting GUI, customers can easily develop even the most detailed
policies to control the use of UNIX/Linux privileges across hundreds of systems
and users from a single point of management.”
Symark has also extended support of PowerBroker to over 25 flavors of UNIX and Linux, including support for Red Hat Enterprise Linux 3.3 running on the IBM POWER5 platform, as part of Symark’s ongoing relationship with IBM. PowerBroker provides UNIX and Linux security and accountability by enabling system administrators to delegate specified administrative task privileges without disclosing the root password and to grant selective access to UNIX and Linux-based corporate resources. Administrative tasks such as system programs mounting, performing backups, and adding new users can be delegated to individuals or groups at a granular level, thus reducing the risk of accidental damage and the threat of malicious activities. Symark PowerBroker can also grant command line user access to files, directories and third-party applications and generic accounts (such as HR, financial or database programs). Symark PowerBroker is a critical component for enterprise security of the UNIX/Linux root account. PowerBroker protects from hackers who could gain access to confidential data, leave rootkits for accessing these systems again in the future, and delete audit trails to cover their tracks.
