The North American Electric Reliability
Council (NERC) recently adopted new standards
to reduce risks to the reliability of the
bulk electric systems from any compromise
of critical cyber assets (computers, software
and communication networks) that support
those systems. These new standards, CIP-002-1
through CIP-009-1, were approved for adoption
by the NERC Board of Trustees on May 2,
2006.
This document lays out the requirements
of the new NERC CIP standards that have
the greatest impact on electric utilities,
and shows how Symark PowerPassword UME and
PowerBroker can be used to meet them and
to document compliance with them. The report
NERC 1200 and CIP-002 through CIP-009 Comparison
(prepared by Nick Lauriat and Adam Lipson
of Network & Security Technologies for ISO
New England, and updated January 30, 2006)
was consulted to ensure focus on the Symark
product features of greatest value in meeting
the new compliance requirements.
