General notes: - Terminology: Symark products are numbered with three digits n.m.p (e.g. 1.5.7). The first two digits n.m (e.g. 1.5) denote a product version. The last digit denotes releases of the specific version. - The functionality of releases within the same version is the same. Release numbers within the version denote new ports and corrections. The Release Notes contained within the downloaded files describe the issues addressed by the release. __________________________________________ 2. HOW TO OBTAIN POWERADVANTAGE FILES Symark Software offers PowerADvantage releases on the Web and CD-ROM. If you wish to obtain PowerADvantage on CD-ROM, please contact your Symark sales representative. 2.1 WEBSITE ACCESS You will need a username and password to access the download area on the website. Section 6, OBTAINING ACCOUNTS AND LICENSES describes how to obtain these. The same username and password can be used to access any item available from the download area. On www.symark.com, click on the DOWNLOADS menu, select PRODUCTS, and follow the instructions on the page. Select the required release from the appropriate table on the PowerADvantage Download page and click on the hyperlink. This downloads the appropriate tarball (see Section 1, SELECTING THE RIGHT POWERADVANTAGE RELEASE) that must be expanded as described in Section 3, EXPANDING THE TARBALLS. 2.2 CD-ROM Each version of PowerADvantage is on a separate CD. There is a directory for each flavor as listed in Section 1, SELECTING THE RIGHT POWERADVANTAGE RELEASE. The format on the CD-ROM is that of the expanded tarball. You will not need passwords, accounts, or unlock codes with the CD-ROM distribution. To view the contents of the CD-ROM on a Unix/Linux system, mount the PowerADvantage CD on your machine (/cdrom is assumed to be the mount point): mount {-ISO9660 mount option} {cdrom-device} /cdrom Refer to the PowerADvantage Installation Guide for Unix/Linux to proceed with the installation. ______________________________ 3. EXPANDING THE TARBALLS After you have obtained the appropriate tarball for your platform, you may expand it as follows: 1. Login as root. 2. Extract the compressed files: - cd (anywhere EXCEPT /tmp) - uncompress .tar.Z or gunzip .tar.Z - tar -xvf .tar If you want to proceed with the installation, refer to the PowerADvantage Guide for Unix/Linux. _____________________________ 4. HOW TO OBTAIN MANUALS The PowerADvantage manuals are provided separately. They are available on the Web and on CD-ROM. If you wish to receive PowerADvantage manuals on CD-ROM, please contact your Symark sales representative. The PowerADvantage manuals consist of several PDF files. You will need Adobe(R) Acrobat Reader(R) to read these files. This program is free and available for download at: http://www.adobe.com 4.1 WEBSITE ACCESS You will need a username and password to access the manuals from the Web. This login is the same login required for downloading PowerADvantage. See Section 6, OBTAINING ACCOUNTS AND LICENSES. On www.symark.com, click on the DOWNLOADS menu, select PRODUCTS, and follow the instructions on the page. The PowerADvantage manuals are available under the DOCUMENTATION tab on the PowerADvantage Download page. Click the link to download the tarball. You should expect to download pamanuals_.tar. Expand the tarball in the same directory you untarred the product tarball. This places several modules in PDF format in the directory. 4.2 CD-ROM PowerADvantage manuals are available on CD-ROM. They are uncompressed and located in PDF format at the root of the CD-ROM directory. ____________________ 5. SYMARK SUPPORT POLICY Symark provides bug fixes for only the most recent version of PowerADvantage and the previous version. When a new version is released, the "end of life" date is established for the prior release. This date is 27 months after the release date for the new version. The end of life date for the newest version will be not established until the next release comes out. Therefore, the end of life for the newest version is always at least 27 months from the current date. During this period Symark will provide Technical Support and bug fixes. After a version has passed its end of life date, Symark will continue to provide Technical Support but will no longer provide bug fixes or code upgrades on those versions. 7.1 OPERATING SYSTEMS SUPPORTED There are two categories of PowerADvantage-Operating System combinations available. These are: Current Systems: This is a list of operating systems on which a release of PowerADvantage is maintained and receives full support. These PowerADvantage releases will be updated if necessary to fix problems with functionality. Legacy Systems: This is a list of operating systems on which previously certified releases of PowerADvantage are made available to customers. In many cases, the PowerADvantage releases listed are superseded by a later (Current Systems) release of PowerADvantage. No programming maintenance or enhancements will be performed on the PowerADvantage releases listed as Legacy Systems. 7.2 LEVELS OF SUPPORT Symark provides two categories of support. Category A: For Current Systems Technical Support is provided to help with resolving issues with policies and environmental interfaces. Programming changes to resolve product defects or to add selected enhancements will be performed. Category B: For Legacy Systems Technical Support is provided to help with resolving issues with policies and environmental interfaces. No programming maintenance or enhancements will be performed. _____________________________ 8. HOW TO CONTACT SYMARK You may contact Symark Software by mail, phone or e-mail (the preferred method).
